2021.12.08 05:34 KagoM_ Back in 5

It was a routine day for me. Dismiss the phone alarm at 6 am sharp, lace up my running shoes, quickly tie my hair in a braided ponytail, then slip into comfy running gear for my morning jog. I’d climbed out of bed, leaving behind my boyfriend, Matt, tucked under the covers.
Just before I dashed out, I couldn’t help but chuckle and roll my eyes at the sight of him snoring and drooling dreamily on his pillow. I shut the bedroom door, then exited the house to take a few rounds around the neighbourhood block.
About thirty minutes later I unlocked the front door again, my forehead and arms glistening with sweat. While heading to the bedroom, I intended to crash onto the bed, just to lay there and catch my breath before hopping into the shower. I opened the door a crack, slipped into the room, and abruptly stopped in my tracks in the instant that my eyes fell upon the sight that awaited me.
Matt wasn’t where he was previously, cozied within the sheets.
Frowning, I flicked on the lights, illuminating the darkened room and Matt’s unmistakable body. He sat in a slumped heap on the floor against the curtained wall. He blankly stared at some indistinguishable spot in the room with glassy eyes. A blade glinted in his limp hand, blood dripping off it. There was red around his neck where a gash had been made.
I spent seconds blankly staring at the visceral sight, frozen in place while my brain stuttered. Then I screamed. My mouth wrenched open to let the feral sound tear out of my throat as I lurched forward in jerky hiccups of movement, before crumpling to kneel in front of the body, shaking my head repeatedly as sobs broke through.
Like a camera taking a snapshot of a memory, the hauntingly crisp image of Matt’s dead body was burned into my brain forever.
My darting eyes caught sight of something else then.
Sticking out of Matt’s jacket pocket was a yellow piece of paper. I crawled forward and snatched it. Swallowing hard, I unfolded the small note in my hands, dreading what it would be. I felt my chest tighten once I recognized the words on the page were scribbled in Matt’s handwriting.
I expected a suicide note. Matt’s final parting words. What I got was far more than I bargained for. I had to read the note twice over to make sure I had understood properly.
I’ll be back in 5 minutes. Please believe me, Sam. Don’t panic and do not call 911. Just wait and trust me. It’ll be over before you know it.
At first, I was completely taken aback. I let the words swirl around my head in a muddle, fumbling to understand. Seconds blurred into minutes of contemplation.
Do not call 911.
I wondered what the hell Matt even meant. What kind of a request was that?
I gave up trying to figure it out. He was dead anyway. 911 couldn’t make a difference even if I decided to go against Matt's wishes and call them. So, I waited, complying with the insane note he left. Just a few more minutes now.
I counted the passing moments in tortured silence, not knowing what I was even waiting for. A few minutes later something bizarre occurred.
Matt’s left ring finger: it was twitching.
My face screwed together as I noticed something else happening.
The torn flesh around Matt’s neck—I can hardly describe it.
It reminded me of a frayed sweater being knitted together by invisible hands.
The shreds and scraps of skin around Matt’s sliced open neck, they were weaving together in an almost artful, hypnotic motion, mending what was broken.
Moments later, the originally parted, sliced skin was impossibly spotless and smooth.
Next, came Matt’s eyes... blinking in rapid flutters.
Finally, his renewed gaze fell upon me.
He was here. I blanched as I replayed the line from his note: I’ll be back in 5.
My eyes twitched I registered his presence, and his eyes locked onto mine.
I crawled forward, closer, and closer still to Matt’s figure, until I could almost touch him. So, I did. I brought my hand to his face until I brushed his cheek.
“This isn’t real,” I said hoarsely, shaking my head.
“I’m here, Sam. I’m back,” came Matt’s reply as he held my own cheek in the palm of his hand that I noticed was still specked with dried blood. The texture of his voice was raspy, just like it was every time he woke up to greet me with that morning, bed voice.
I think it was a refusal, which is why what happened next, happened. My mind wanted to reject everything I had witnessed.
My face was the first to go utterly numb, before the rest of my body followed soon after. I swayed as blackness closed in from the edges of my vision, while I blinked weakly.
I faintly remember Matt shaking me by the shoulders, tapping my lolling face, shouting words that I could hardly hear in the surreal murkiness. He was so far away now. With a relieved exhale, my eyes drew themselves closed and I let the warm, safe darkness steal me away from the moment.
When my bleary eyes blinked back open again, I found myself laying in my bed.
I peeked out the blankets cocooning me, and the first thing my eyes fell upon was Matt. He stood at the foot of the bed, next to the slightly ajar door. His arms were folded over against his chest. He was watching me.
I shut my eyes and barely stifled a groan. There was no way I could bring myself to look at him, not yet. Instead, I slipped back under the covers, and hid.
Eventually, I took a deep breath, steeled myself, then peeled the covers off, hoping I was ready to face him.
When I did, Matt wasn’t standing by the door anymore.
Instead, he was waiting by the bedside. He stood holding a steaming, dainty cup of tea placed atop a saucer. I didn’t know when he’d entered the room, and I wasn’t even aware of how many minutes had passed with me curled up inside the sheets with shut eyes.
“Here, this will help,” Matt said as he gently offered me the cup.
I considered the gesture then propped myself on a shaky elbow as I shifted into a seated position, settling into the large pillows behind me. I accepted the saucer wordlessly.
I kept my silence as I sipped on the hot liquid that trailed down my throat and lit up my insides with a honeyed warmth.
Once I was done, I set the porcelain cup back down with a clink onto the saucer, then slumped over, cupping my face in my hands and sighing deeply into them. Despite the tea, my body and mind still felt like an exhausted wreck.
A tense silence blanketed the room. Matt was the first to break it.
“I-uh owe you an explanation, for what you saw. I just don’t know if you’ll believe me.”
“Really?” I asked, turning to look at him. It was hard resisting the urge to roll my eyes. “Try me,” I said.
Matt paused, swallowed nervously, then took the plunge.
“I was traveling. I left for 5 minutes as I said in the note, to another place, then I traveled back here. It’s an ability I have. I get to go to where no one can dream of going, temporarily at least.”
“What do you mean? Where did you… go?” I asked.
Matt’s eyes flickered over me with uncertainty, as if calculating whether to disclose more. I shot him an annoyed look because I was getting irked by the way he was stalling, still hiding this from me.
After being faced with my glare, Matt relented.
“I traveled to the afterlife.”
It took a few moments of me mulling over his words before I blurted out, “Come again?”
“That’s it. That’s where I went. The afterlife.”
The confused grin on my face vanished once I inspected Matt’s unflinching face enough to know he wasn’t toying with me. He believed what he was saying.
“So, let me understand this,” I said. “You died for all of five minutes during which you claim you traveled to the afterlife?”
I should've laughed at how ridiculous he sounded. But all I could do was grimace, as my face fell like a landslide. The one thing I desperately wanted in that moment was the ability to deny his story. But I faltered when I realized I couldn’t.
I’d seen it with my own two eyes: the way Matt’s damaged flesh neatly wove itself back together as if guided by some unseen force. There was no natural explanation for whatever the hell that was.
I shifted uncomfortably in my seat as I contemplated the insane implication of what he was suggesting. The afterlife being real? The first few words struggled out of my throat after my unnerved, silent contemplation.
“Have you done it before? I mean, is this the first time you’ve done this traveling thing, assuming what you’re saying is true?” I asked.
“This is the first time since we’ve been together. You're the best thing that’s happened to me. You made me forget I needed to go back to that place," Matt said. "But recently I had been itching to return. There was something I needed to take care of. It was only a matter of time.”
“So, what is this ‘something’? Why did you feel the need to go back?”
Matt shifted his knee’s weight on the mattress, letting it slowly sink in before continuing.
“My father,” he said.
“I don’t understand,” I said, squinting slightly.
“I was visiting him.”
“But your dad—” I hesitated. “He’s dead.”
As soon as I finished the sentence, I let in a small gasp of understanding. Matt smiled faintly as he acknowledged that I was starting to catch on.
“The day dad died,” Matt said, “the hospital called me on his behalf. They said his final request was to see me. Apparently, he didn’t have much time left and he missed me. I almost dropped the call, but something within me pushed me to see him one last time. We didn’t have the best relationship, but I still decided to pay my old man one last visit.”
Matt's last line wasn't exactly news to me. I knew Matt's relationship with his father was strained, to say the least. He hadn't even taken me to introduce me to his father, despite us being together for four years then. All I knew was his mom had died when he was nine, and he'd lived with his father since. Whenever I tried to learn details about his family history or childhood, Matt would coldly brush me off and change the topic. Over time I figured it was perhaps better not to pry. This would be one of the first times he'd ever shared a story about his father.
My ears piqued attentively and I began hanging onto every word that followed.
“When I arrived at the place, I found dad asleep in his hospital bed. He was hooked onto an intubator, struggling to breath. There were so many wires coming out of him. I had never seen him so weak. But the moment I walked in I was surprised to see someone standing by his bedside already. I didn’t know that dad had other visitors. At first, I assumed it was one of dad’s old friends or drinking buddies, but I’d never encountered this man before in my life. He looked so… odd. I would’ve remembered if I’d seen him before,” Matt said.
“Why, what did he look like?” I asked.
“He was dressed awfully smartly for one. Wore a black suit jacket, tailored to fit, with an expensive silver watch by the looks of it. His hair was slicked back, jet black. He looked like he belonged in a movie not here. Looked out of place for a simple clinic visit, and for my dad of all people. When he heard my footsteps, he turned to finally acknowledge me. That’s when I got a good look at his face. He almost passed as an ordinary looking man in his prime. Could’ve been good looking too once upon a time in his prime, but he had quite a few mean scars running across his face like they were from a fight, or many fights. I hesitated when I saw his eyes: gray, hollow, and missing their pupils. I thought he was blind at first, but no. I swear it felt like his eyes were burrowing into me. I felt... naked, like he saw through me. I still tell myself he was blind to make myself feel better because it's scarier to imagine just how much he really saw of me that day. We just stood there, me and him, watching each other."
“What did he want? Did you eventually ask?” I asked, getting more unnerved and morbidly curious all the same.
“He dodged most of my questions like why he was there and how he knew my dad,” Matt said, shrugging. “When I asked who he was, he simply said that all I needed to know was that he was ‘a family friend.’ He told me my dad didn’t have much time left, then he asked if I wanted the chance to see him again. I didn’t understand what he meant, so that’s when he handed me this.“
Matt reached into his pocket and pulled out a sheathed knife. He slid it out, holding it by its bone handle as he presented it to me.
A chill tingled my spine when I realized it was the same blade I’d seen Matt holding in his limp hand when I found him dead, but now I was getting a more intimate look at it.
This wasn’t some ordinary kitchen or even hunting knife.
There were strange inscriptions and symbols carved into the curved blade that was made of a dark metal like rippling, ebony steel. It had an unsettling, razor-sharp edge to it that made me sink deeper into the safety of my pillow, because I didn’t want to be anywhere near that thing.
“This is what he gave me that day,” Matt said. “He said this blade was a key and that if I was brave, I could use it to open the passageway that would allow me to see dad again. Before I could ask any more questions about what the hell he was talking about, he just turned on me and walked away. Then suddenly, the heart monitor flatlined. When I turned to look I saw that dad wasn’t breathing anymore. The doctor and nurses started pouring into the room, and I saw that man calmly walking past them and out. It was all just a blur. I was then led outside by a nurse. I heard the commotion inside, them performing CPR. But ten minutes later the doctor came out and broke the news. Dad was dead. Just like that. I hadn’t even gotten a chance to speak to him yet.”
The heavy story was a lot to digest. I was taken aback, and had to pause to mull over everything I’d just heard.
“Matt,” I piped. “What was that man even doing in the same room as your father before he left? Don’t you think he might’ve had something to do with his death?”
Matt nodded gravely.
“That’s what I thought too,” he said. “It seemed suspect so I went to ask the receptionist at the desk about him, but she said no man of that description had signed in. I even stopped a few of the nurses and the doctor that arrived when dad flatlined. None of them knew what man I was talking about, even though I saw him walk right past them.”
“That’s impossible,” I said as I shook my head, baffled.
“I know. It’s crazy. I gave it a good thought later. There’s no way that man was a hallucination or something. He had to be real. Otherwise, how else did I receive this knife?”
Matt turned the glinting, sleek blade over in his hands, once again drawing my attention to it.
“Why did you keep it?” I asked, shooting him an interrogating look with raised brows. “You could’ve turned the knife in to the police, or just thrown it away.”
I wondered why Matt had the interest of being in possession of a weapon handed to him by a creep who possibly had a hand in his father’s death.
“I-I can barely explain it Sam,” he stuttered. “I felt drawn to it. I know it sounds messed up but a part of me was curious. I hated myself for it, how everyday I would remove it from its sheath just to turn it over in my hands and admire it. It just felt so right to hold it.”
I was so disturbed that I didn’t know what to say. I kept my silence and let Matt continue spilling.
“In the end I didn’t even have much to figure out. When it was time, the knife guided me, nudged me to place it onto my neck at the right spot,” he said. “I was so scared, but in the end, it was so soft and swift. I’d done it just like the man said: used the key to unlock the passageway. When I opened my eyes again, I was someplace else.”
“The afterlife, right?” I asked.
Matt gave a silent nod.
“That’s where I encountered him again.”
“Your dad,” I whispered, as everything started to come together in my mind.
“Yeah. I was so happy to see him again. I hadn’t even gotten to say goodbye to him. We had so much left unsaid,” Matt said. A sad look plagued his downcast eyes.
“There was so much to catch up on, things I never got to tell him,” he said. "So we sat down and had a good, long chat. And I started by having him apologize, first for the hell he'd put me and my mom through, then for driving her to suicide. I never told you that part about her death, did I?”
“What?” I murmured, thrown off by the question and sudden revelation.
“You should've seen how pathetic he looked, begging for mercy, real ironic since it was the one thing he’d never gave to me as a child. Mercy."
I frowned as Matt’s face twisted maliciously, struggling to grapple with everything he was saying.
“And after everything he’d done to mom and I," Matt seethed, flexing his wrists, "our little five minute bonding session in his cell will never be enough to make the bastard pay while he rots in hell.”

2021.12.08 05:34 WillingHuckleberry1 What kind of headphones would give the best audio for music and video games?

I want to get a new pair of headphones. I'm currently using hyperx cloud alpha. First I wanted to get the hyperx cloud alpha S which is an upgraded version of the alpha. Then i saw the cloud mix which has a higher frequency range (10hz-40khz). Then I saw the cloud orbit which has planar drivers and some people said it's the best sounding headphone they've used. Now I'm just confused and have no idea what to look for.
Is planar better than dynamic? I've never used planar or electrostatic. I obviously want the best quality audio but would I notice a difference between dynamic and planar if I'm just playing video games and listing to spotify? Do dynamic drivers get any better than the hyperx cloud alpha? Should I get planar over dynamic? Will it be worth the extra money?
I mainly want to know if planar would be worth the extra money considering I only play games and listen to music. I've been using the same pair of headphones for like 5 years so i have no idea what else is out there. Should I look at a different brand? Hyperx is very comfortable and sounds the best compared to other cheap headsets like turtle beach or sony playstation headphones.

2021.12.08 05:34 bluberribaby Health insurance for baby due this January?

Hi everyone I’m a first time mom due later this January, and I’m wondering how to go about getting my baby health insurance? I’m currently still on my parents health insurance but this does not cover my baby. Baby’s father has insurance thru government or something like that, I’m not really sure what his plan is exactly, but I read that babies will only be automatically covered under medicaid if their mom is which I am not. I am from NY but living in PA with my bf although I have not fully transferred my license here yet or anything like that so I technically am still an NY resident. He is a PA resident.
How can I go about preparing for this? Thank you in advance.
EDIT: I’m not looking for private insurance. I was a student and still am but am not working right now and won’t be for at least the first 6 months. I’m my dad’s dependent as of now and he is retired. My bf just started working a job where he’s making more money than he was previously, so next tax season, or something like that, he’s figuring that the low income insurance he has now will be taken away.
Basically, how do I go about signing my baby up for some type of medicaid insurance? As I have not held a steady career-like job literally ever (I just turned 23 and am a senior in college). Since I am a dependent I guess it doesn’t matter what I make, it matters what my dad makes? This is all so confusing.

2021.12.08 05:34 brooklyn_dodger I don’t mean to be redundant

I’m floundering here… To be frank I don’t know my ass from anything for that matter. I’d like to preface this by saying I’m making a major career change. Im a 25f who has a BA degree, that in my humble opinion ain’t worth the paper it’s printed on. Im basically an unskilled paper pusher and I’m fed up. Im ready for a trade. I guess I have the benefit that I’ve grown up around construction zones. (Step-dad’s a Union carpenter, mom’s a teamster, grandma was an apprentice electrician in her heyday). Anyway, I’m looking to make a change. I’ve marked my calendar to put in an app for lu 440, but I’m as green as they come. Other than working side jobs with my step-dad painting I don’t know much. Advice is appreciated. And if anyone has specific advice about 440 (Riverside, Ca) or about Los Angeles please send it my way.

2021.12.08 05:34 Danish_Viking11 New DM and new players - how to do it?

Hey everyone,
A couple of my friends and I have talked about wanting to play DnD, we all bonded over never having played it, but wanting to.
So I bought the starter set, the one with the lost mines of phandelver, read through the rule book and currently reading through the campaign. Also looked through this subreddit, and watched some YouTube videos with Matthew Mercer and a couple of other guys. I am the one DMing the session we’ll be having.
My main concern is how to introduce all these new players to the vast amount of rules there is to the game. I myself am having a little trouble getting down all the essentials, but will obviously be grinding to get them down beforehand, so I know my stuff as DM.
I have a few questions.
1 - How would you present the rules of the game in an easily digestible way for new players? 2 - Are there some rules that don’t matter too much as we are all trying to get the hang of things? 3 - how do I handle movement in combat? Seems overwhelming to keep track of where everyone is and how far they can move with just pen and paper. 4 - I’m unsure how keen they will be to RP. I don’t want to force them, but would like to encourage it somehow. How do I do that? 5 - Is there anything I can do as DM, that might not be obvious, that can make the game more fun for the players?
Any other tips/tricks you have for me would be greatly appreciated. I’ve read through some threads, and you all seem like a good bunch of people!
Thank you in advance.
